Narrative

In South India, the concept and technology of ecological sanitation has been strongly promoted by Mr. Paul Calvert for the last ten years. The most common model of ‘ecosan’ implemented in Tamilnadu till date is a composting toilet with separation of urine and possibly also of wash water.

For the first time in the entire Villupuram District the ECO- Sanitation Toilets were constructed with the help of Eco-Pro, Auroville and DRDA (UNICEF and TSC Fund) for the benefit of these families with their marginal contribution.

In the post scenario of Tsunami, the Palmyra rehabilitation program formed two women SHG’s, comprising of 40 women namely “Alaiyosai” (sound of waves), and “Kadalparavai” (sea birds). After seeing the success of the project and the utility value among the women folk in the area this activity has been replicated to two other villages namely, Vada Agaram and Edaicherry. As of now 75 such toilets were constructed.
