Kalampatzom was destroyed by Guatemalan troops during the civil war of the 1980's. Many of the families are in the process to move back to their original home sites now that water is available.

54 homes in Kalampatzom now have a place to wash and treat gray water in the community.

Gray water disposal is a major problem in rural areas where household income is scarce. Simple designs can improve this situation.

"Pila" wash ..."Pila" wash stand in place in a home.
Drain from the pila is routed to the garden soak away pit thus keeping the surrounding patio free of standing gray water.

In each home a concrete base for water starion was built with a drain in the floor to a soak away nutrient pit. Fruit trees and various fruit bearing plants will be planted around the pit which is filled with compost to act as a sponge for the gray water

The water project consisted of digging about 5 kilometers of trench to feed water to all of the 54 homes. All of the tubing had to be carried by hand to the trench sites by trails.

Each of APS projects involve the community members in the construction of their water system. In this photo the men of the village committee are threading galvanized pipe to make the water stand pipes for each house.
