Binh Trieu Commune is located in a delta region, along Truong Giang River, 35km south of Hoi An in Quang Nam Province. The commune has 2,446 households and is home to 9,654 people. Nearly 70% of the population lives on farming along with raising buffaloes and pigs. The average monthly per capita income is $16. About 7,1% of the residents of the Binh Trieu community live below the GOV poverty line, i.e., earning a monthly per capita income of USD 12 or less. The project hamlet , Hung My is the poorest hamlet of the community with the poverty rate is 22%.
Due to its coastal location, low topography and the vicinity of Truong Giang River, the groundwater of the area is contaminated with lime, salt, and sediments and has bad smell all year round. 90% of the population uses this water for their daily activities. Water for drinking or cooking however is either taken from the wells and is filtered in traditional way, through canvas with sand, coal and stones, or is fetched 500m away or purchased from vendors.
Few families in Hung My Hamlets have improved sanitary latrines, and hand washing with soap is not regularly done as often as it should be. About 30% of the population suffers from water-borne illnesses, digestive problems and skin infections being most common.
Water for the clean water system will most likely be taken from drilled wells within the area.
