Hamlets 3&4 in Binh Dao Commune and Group 3 in Binh Trieu Commune are located 55 km south-west of Da Nang City in central Vietnam. They neighbor the communes of Binh Duong in the north, Binh Trieu in the west, Binh Hai in the south and Binh Minh in the east. The total area is 1,150 ha, out of which only 320 ha may be used for farming.
Residents mainly subsist on farming rice, cassava, sweet potatoes and laboring. Some also fish in a small branch of the Thu Bon River but this has a constantly deteriorating quality due to erosion, and today most fishermen have turned to laboring as the river is almost totally filled with sand.
The average monthly per capita income is USD 17, and 31% of the population lives below the national poverty line, i.e., earning a monthly per capita income of USD 12 or less. Due to the difficult living conditions, many people move from the area to seek work in urban areas.
The community is located close to the Truong Giang River, which has brackish water. As a result, groundwater in the area is generally salty and contains rust-colored sediments.
For those who can afford it, fresh drinking water is available for purchase in local grocery stores or markets for about 60 cents per 20 liters. The poorer residents are limited to using the polluted groundwater for their daily activities. There is a critical need for access to clean water for the residents in this area.
Few families in Hamlets 3&4 in Binh Dao Commune and Group 3 in Binh Trieu Commune have improved sanitary latrines, and hand washing with soap is not regularly done as often as it should be. Water-borne diseases are a problem for the residents, many of whom suffer from related skin, eye, and digestive illnesses.
