Dai Lanh is a mountainous area which is located about 60 km from Danang and 20 km from the Dai Loc District centre. The total population of Dai Lanh Commune is 10,053 who live in 2,065 households (HHs), ie an average household size of 4.9 persons. There are 9,242 persons in 1,871 HHs in the project area. It experiences natural disasters each year, namely droughts, storms and floods. More than 80% of the population subsist on farming.
The Dai Lanh population obtains drinking water from wells that have been drilled or dug. Several of the wells have high levels of sediment and odors. Some households have installed manual stone and sand filters to reduce these issues. However, 50% of the population manually transport clean water from local clean water wells to their homes or purchase bottled drinking water at a cost of 20,000 VND (about $US1.20) for 20 litres. Poorer residents are limited to using polluted well water for their daily activities. As a result of the poor quality drinking water, the population experiences high rate of water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, trachoma and gynaecological skin infections in women.
About 60% of households have sanitary latrines (septic and semi-septic systems).
