Report: Sanitary Latrine Program for the Central Region of Vietnam

With funding from Blue Planet Run, we will co-finance the construction of 433 hygenic latrines for 433 households in 8 communes in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam provinces in Central Vietnam.

Blue Planet Run financial support for the construction of hygienic latrines in eight communes in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam Provinces improved the sanitation awareness and overall living environment of the local residents. The hygienic latrine program also provides motivation for developing personal hygiene and preserving a clean environment in the communities in order to reduce environmentally-borne diseases, improve community health and reduce costs for disease examination and treatment.

 433 additional hygienic latrines were constructed in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam Provinces. Although the increased rate of hygienic latrine construction is not large in the two provinces, this project will serve as an example for the further development of latrines in the community.

 The local people are supportive participants in the project implementation thanks to the enthusiasm of the PMB and the local authorities.
 Local residents have become more aware of environmental sanitation as a result of the EMW programs. Furthermore, some commune staff have acquired good knowledge and often endorse good sanitation to the community. Thus, project development is advancing.
 Construction teams have been set up and trained on how to build hygienic latrines.
 Hygienic latrines have been constructed in areas where clean water systems have been provided by EMW.

Project implementation often coincided with harvest times. Furthermore, the number of construction teams did not meet the demands of the local people. Therefore, latrine construction for some households was not on schedule which affected the first inspection and acceptance dates.
