Heloo Mary and Joan,
We think you have a well thought through proposal. However, we would appreciate to know if you have any selection criteria for the 20 women you plan on training?
Best Wishes!

Does your budget reflect that you have done appropriate costing for making 20 filters during the first phase of the project?
By OCEAN Foundation Posted on Wed 03 Dec 2008, over 17 years ago
Well. we probabily didn't cost our budget item specific, our prices do vary always, but actually 10 fiters will be more approriate.

I noticed you began to write a third phase. Did you intend to finish describing this phase?
By Women's Earth Alliance Posted on Wed 26 Nov 2008, over 17 years ago
Please disregard the last comment about phases. It was intended for another group. Sorry!

Is the WASH advocacy seminar the same as the training on the BSF or will they be separate trainings?
By OCEAN Foundation Posted on Wed 26 Nov 2008, over 17 years ago
The WASH advocacy seminar will be part of the training as the group will participate but only the 20 selected women will be trained on the biosand filter. We think it is necesary to talk and promote key issues in water, sanitation and hygiene so that all participants understand why water is such a critical issue as well as securing its safety as most of the diseases are water related.

This is great, Mary. This makes sense.
By Global Women's Water Initiative Posted on Wed 26 Nov 2008, over 17 years ago
Tell me a little more about how the 20 women trained will operate the production of BSFs, advocate for the use of the filters and recruit new women to be trained, and be community stewards? Will the subsequent 20 women also start a small business? Will this create competition? Is there a market large enough for several groups of women to be producing and selling BSFs? I guess all these questions mean I don’t quite clearly understand the role of all the women trained.

I would add: How will the 20 women implementers receive ongoing support/guidance where needed?
By OCEAN Foundation Posted on Wed 03 Dec 2008, over 17 years ago
Well, we( OCEAN) intends to continue to support and provide guidance to the women through monthly visits or as the need arises when the project takes off at least for a short term period.

Who is WASCOM? You refer to them in the Sustainability Plan section as the organization to sustain the WASH campaign?
By OCEAN Foundation Posted on Wed 26 Nov 2008, over 17 years ago
Yes, sorry we should have explain our abreviations, WASCOM means Water and Sanitation Committtees that have been establisbed in all the local governments within Plateau State. Some of OCEANs women belong to this group and are a bit conversant with the water issues. We intend to use them in the pilot project so they can eventually own the process(we have consulted them already of couse!) and help to drive the project after we disengage since they live within bokkos locality. They will be the biosand stewards
By Global Women's Water Initiative Posted on Wed 26 Nov 2008, over 17 years ago
That's great! Thanks for the clarification. The WASCOMs are a government initiative then? What kind of WASH training do they receive? It's great that your pilot project has been thought through so well.
By OCEAN Foundation Posted on Wed 03 Dec 2008, over 17 years ago
The WASCOM is part of the government's initative to promote issues of water and sanitation at the local government levels in collaboration with the rural water supply and sanitation agency unit in the state. They also work with NGOs and other groups. This agency has
units in all the local councils and the(unit) mobilise the people through the WASCOM. This committee has been helpful because it insists that women be a part of the leadership rather than just on lookers so it has given the local women a "voice" in terms of citing of water and sanitation projects. They have basic training on water, sanitation and hygiene issues, to promote hygiene and advocacy techniques to engage government for provision of water projects and facilities.
