In the main village Darewadi, the watershed development project was implemented by WOTR and was completed in 2000. Today Darewadi village has become a model village of the watershed project. There are three tribal hamlets (Kalevasti, Pardhivasti and Pawarvasti) in the watershed area. Out of these, in two hamlets WOTR has implemented drinking water projects, and the people have access to the drinking water as well as for domestic and livestock purpose. The third hamlet (Pawarvasti) belongs to the Bhil community and has no provision of drinking water near to their hamlet. Therefore, the Darewadi Gram Panchayat has taken the initiative and prepared the drinking water proposal for this hamlet and submitted to the Panchayat Samiti. However since last two years the proposal is not sanctioned under the govt. scheme

Project Narrative

- Pawarvasti is a small hamlet of the Darewadi main village. The integrated watershed programme has been successfully implemented in Darewadi village by WOTR.
- The drinking water was provided by the tankers in the village. However, after the completion of the watershed development program, the village became tanker free. Now the drinking water well has sufficient water. The drinking water is provided through the piped water supply scheme, which was completed in the year 2000 under the Govt. Scheme. At present the village as well as other remote hamlets receive the drinking water from the piped water supply scheme except Pawarvasti.
- A couple years back a separate proposal of the drinking water supply for Pawarvasti was submitted to the Zilla Parishad by the Gram Panchayat. The plan and estimates were prepared by the Panchayat Samiti. But the proposal is not yet sanctioned and there is no possibility in future that it would be sanctioned due to the local political problems.
- Some tribal families have agricultural land. At present the people from this hamlet collect the drinking water from the private well, which has insufficient water in the summer. This well runs dry in the summer. Therefore, the people have to tread a distance of half km. to fill water from the common stand post located in the main village.
- The women and yong girls have to struggle for 3-4 hours each day just to fetch drinking water for household consumption. In order to solve the drinking water problem of this hamlet, the drinking water supply scheme is proposed. The assured water source has been identified at the downstream of the earthen dam in the field of Kashinath Pawar, at the distance of 500 ft. from the proposed site of water storage tank.
- The community from this hamlet has decided to solve the drinking water problem through their initiative rather than depending on the Gram Panchayat. Therefore, they have approached WOTR to support the drinking water project.
- One farmer named Kashinath Bhima Pawar has given the permission to drill a bore well in his field for the drinking water purpose without any compensation. A legal document will be obtained from him before the initiation of the implementation of the project.

The following activities are proposed -
• Drilling of new bore well of 300ft deep
• Construction of new water storage tank of 7500 liters
• Laying of pipeline around 500 ft and distribution of water
• Construction of 3 stand posts
• Capacity building and Training to the Water Committee and target group

- It is planned to promote and implement the cost effective and community managed drinking water project which would benefit the deprived and vulnerable tribal community from Pawar hamlet as per the village situation and their demand.
- A bore well would be drilled in the field of Shri. Kashinath Bhima Pawar. A submersible pump of 3 H.P.will be installed on the bore well and the water will be transported through the rising main pipe line of 500 ft in length and stored in the newly constructed storage tank of 7500 liters capacity.
- The location of the water storage tank has been identified on the small hillock close to the hamlet, so as the water will flow through gravity to the stand posts. The water will be distributed through newly constructed 3 stand posts at different locations. The internal pipe line would be 1500 ft. in length.
- The drinking water project would be implemented through the Water Committee. The water committee has been formed involving 7 women members. The Water Committee (pani samittee) will be responsible for implementation, supervision, quality control and monitoring of activities with the support of village development committee and WOTR staff. The funds would be released directly to the pani samittee bank account.
- The committee would handle the transactions and would be responsible for maintenance of accounts. The technical and social mobilization support would be provided by our Sangamner implementation unit. The Water Committee and the target group’s capacity building would be done by the implementation team of WOTR.
- After the successful completion of the project the Water Committee and the Village Development Committee of Darewadi would be responsible for the distribution of water, collection of water tax and also repairs and maintenance of the project.

The project would be completed in one phase.
The funds would be released in 3-4 installments. After monitoring of the first installment disbursed and on satisfaction of work as per plan, the next installment would be released. The monitoring would be c

- Since the tribal people are neglected by the Panchayat Raj Institutions (Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti ) for the developmental activities, WOTR had conducted several meetings in the Pawarvasti to organize the community for the common cause like drinking water and to get the benefits/facilities of BPL schemes under Government programs.
- WOTR has been in contact with this village since last 6 months. Most of the families have migrated for the labour work in nearby irrigated area. Therefore, it was difficult to organize all households to get the consensus for future plans. Now all families are willing and have agreed to co-operate each other to achieve the common objectives like drinking water and access to different Govt. schemes.
- The women from this hamlet have been motivated to organize themselves in the SHG. One women’s self help group has been formed involving 12 members.
- Two specialized trainings would be conducted for the water committee and village community. The management of drinking water and sanitation project, health and hygiene issues and post drinking water project management would be covered followed by one exposure visit to other successful drinking water project of tribal community.
- In the initial stage, the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) was conducted in the village to understand the local situation and to collect the basic data of the village such as no. of households, population, their locations, infrastructure, facilities available in the village, natural resources, land irrigation cropping pattern, drinking water facilities, sanitation situation etc.
- During the problem analysis it was realized that ‘drinking water’ is one of the important need of the village. The SHGs and SMS decided to solve the drinking water problem and have taken initiative for the same. The initial planning of the project is being done through the PRA by the village community and the technical plan and estimates is prepared by WOTR staff. As per the WOTR’s norms the village community has to agree to contribute minimum 10% of the total cost either in cash or in kind. Accordingly the village community has agreed to contribute 10% of the total cost.
- The legal documents from the owner of the land of bore well will be obtained by the Water Committee.
- After the completion of the project the water committee would be responsible for the repairs and maintenance and post management of the project.

All the families of the Pawarvasti are tribal community (Bhil) and live below poverty line. Out of 34 families, about 7 families are landless. Remaining 28 households own land of 29 ha., out of which 17 ha. land is cultivable and 12 is wasteland. The land owned families can take only one crop .i.e. winter crop because their land is located at the foothills in the downstream of the small earthen dam. Ttherefore in rainy season due to the water logging problem they cannot cultivate the land. Only after the rainy season, late in the months of Jan/February the land is dried up and suitable for cultivation. However, due to non availability of irrigation facilities, the farmers cannot take the irrigated crop. Therefore, hardly they get some yield from the agriculture land.
