To treat the contaminated water from flush toilets and prevent access to the fecal material, a septic tank will be built. Additionally the existing toilets will be maintained and metal doors installed.
The project will be executed on the premises of the local school. In which 3 teachers educate 87 children, thereof 43 boys and 44 girls.
The community consists of 50 households with a total of approximately 200 inhabitants.
We build working relationships with the communities while providing access to water for all members within the community. Our goal is good health for the communities in which we work, therefore health and hygiene promotions are an integral part of each project. To further improve the health and hygiene for children APS carries out specific projects providing appropriate sanitation (hand-washing stations and latrines or flush toilets with septic tanks) to schools in the communities.
The school “Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta Batzuchil” is located in BATZUCHIL a community in the Municipality of Nebaj. Nebaj belongs to the so-called Ixil-Triangle in the Department of El Quiché in Guatemala, Central America. The community Batzuchil is located approximately 15 km north-west of Nebaj. The village is accessible via a dust road from Nebaj throughout the year. Set amid a mountainous landscape, the climate is cold, humid and rainy.
The school has a three cabin flush toilet with old wooden doors. The contaminated toilet water is disposed directly into a river and local water source.
The village has a gravity-flow water system implemented by Guatemalan NGO FIS in 1998, providing a household connection for all 50 families. The school has a hand-washing station, implemented by Agua Para La Salud in 2001, which is well maintained.
To prevent contamination of water from fecal matter, a septic tank will be built. Additionally the existing toilets will be repaired/maintained and metal doors installed.
