Pump Sustainability

By Agua Para La Salud (APLS) Posted on Thu 22 Aug 2013, over 10 years ago

I recently read this report from a study done in Kenya using the SWN pump. Have you found SWN pump is the best for this type of project or is it the only pump available in your area. Are there skilled repair individuals in the community?

"Inefficient sustainability " (Water, Engineering and Development Centre Loughborough University 2002)

Akala Market, near Kisumu, has a community owned SWN pump which was installed on a hand-dug well in 1989. The pump breaks down once or twice every month, usually because the riser pipes come loose or break at the joints. Each time a local hand pump repairer visits and gets the pump up and running again, by using improvised parts and methods, for a fee of about KSh3,000 (US$40). The community do not know of any alternative repairer that they could call upon and hence it is in the repairer’s interests that the pump breaks down regularly. Since this is the only source of water for the market and the WATSAN committee charges KSh2 per jerrican collected they are able to afford these repair charges. However, the amount of money that they are collecting could be used to pay for longer-term repairs or to
purchase a new pump if the community were provided with alternatives."

One of the key factors in sustainability is the presence of women on the water committee because they are the ones carrying the water and using the pump. What is the gender content of the water committee?

assessment and data collection

By International Lifeline Fund Posted on Tue 17 Sep 2013, over 10 years ago

Thank you for your detailed description of the project and of your previous projects in the area. I was wondering who were the members of the Wells Monitoring Committees (WMCs). In your description you mention that it is 10 members of the school management committee - does this include teachers and parents, as well as school management staff? What type of project monitoring is done, i.e. what information is collected and when?

By Tanzania Mission to the Poor and Disabled (PADI) Posted on Thu 26 Sep 2013, over 10 years ago

1.Yes it include teachers and parents too.in the commitee
2. Project Monitoring is done to ensure the fpllowing is happening in the project :Proper well dept and materials are used, work is done in proper time, community invovement and committes trainings done properly, pump house is also built timlely etc

A few questions...

By The Samburu Project Posted on Wed 25 Sep 2013, over 10 years ago

Msigwa...
I enjoyed reading your proposal. It is especially interesting to conduct a peer review of someone you know. I think fondly of the time we spent together in Samburu. It's hard to believe that it's already been two years!

It sounds like your work has continued on successfully. Congratulations. A few questions:
1. How do you identify the schools/communities you work with?
2. Do you conduct hygiene & sanitation training?
3. Is the well drilling contractor located near to the school?

Thank you.

Kristen

Thank you Kristen, I remember the trip to Samburu. Is true is almost two years now I hope you still doing well.We thank God we are still doing well too..
1. The commitee members are identified by by the community themselves considering gender (50% women) but the membe of the committee must have a spirit of Volunteerism atherwuise will not fit to the committee
2.We do conduct hygene and santation training facilitated by Water Authority Officers
3. Water Drilling Contractor are within the same town (5km away from the school)
Thanks

Pump sustainability

Dear Lynn Roberts, thank you for your observation I would like to inform you that PADI always when start to implementits projects do involve government technicians concerning with different projects including water pumps. This approaches enabled our projects being monitered and supported by government officials/techinicians as part of their daily work.In some projects like Health projects and loan the district council has assigned one staff working with PADI but salary is paid by the Council. In this case theirfor Hand Pump repair the technicial does not chair higher price what is very importand is that community must be able to purchase spares. It is affordable . We have installed 9 hand pump since 2006 in secondary school to date the pump are still working well. Also thecouncil has installed over 50 hand pumps in different institutions in rural areas since 1999,the pump are still working
The community water committee involve 5 women and 5men depending on nature of the community, it can be more women than men.

In the proposal under "Financial" you mention that the budget is attached, but it is not. Could you attach the budget with itemized expenses?
Could you supply the expected depth of the well and /or the cost per meter of drilling the well? How deep is the sanitary seal that the well driller will install in the well?
Could you attach photos of completed wells in the area?

Thank you Iskaka....The project and the financials, from my limited knowledge of bore hole water supply , looks good and is much needed to promote any type of hygiene education; prevent illness; and prevent long water carry times....Best of luck.
