African women and water conference

By Blue Planet Network Posted on Thu 13 Dec 2007, over 16 years ago

This is a question more for existing PWX members than ASD.

I am excited by the women's conference in Nairobi (http://africanwomenandwater.org/) and would like to hear about what other's think of the potential of training women to execute on small community water projects in this way. I am both interested in views on the training methodology and also on the focus on income-generating projects.

PWX can be a platform for them to use for their project application and management and for connectivity to both small groups and also to the experience of existing PWX partners.

Thanks

Should we extend our network to the Philippines and do a small project there? For me the potential of ASD is in the Africa conference, but folks who are working in SE Asia (EMW and Kairos) might also want to weigh in on SE Asia work. Thanks in advance.

I'm also out in the field right now with quite poor internet access in Sierra Leone. But the first impression about ASD is a very positive one, not only focussing on the technical aspects but having a strong socio-economic perspective. I'd be happy to see them joining PWX. In case need arises, we could assist or assess in SE Asia, but would also welcome them in African projects. Best, Martin

Thanks Martin for your offer to help - your experience in Cambodia and else would be very beneficial. However, it not clear to me what projects does ASD work on, their training and experience, their capacity & org, etc. Realizing they are new, i would expect more on their website. Other than their training there is not much info.

So, if they submit a project for the Philippines, we would need much more info or instead could connect us with some of the other folks who have been working for years in the area.

A single drop: year report?

By Protos Posted on Thu 13 Dec 2007, over 16 years ago

Does ASD submit yearly transparant year reports of their activities and their financial results. I do not find it from the website.
From that we would be able to see where they collect their money and how and where they invest it; I'm particularly interested to see the split in their investments between education-formation-training and actual building sustainable infrastructure for better access to drinking water.
Thanks in advance, Marc

A single drop: year report?

We are working on this year's annual report and can submit that in the beginning of the year. 2007 was the year that we developed the program so it will be a better reflection of monies spent on the village projects. We started our vlllage water projects in the later half of 2006 and most of the money was spent on start-up for the Philippines office and training local staff. We have just redesigned our website and will be able to upload our financials for 2006 before the end of this year.

I'm out in the field right now and will be back in the office on Sunday and can submit it by late next week. Thanks for your patience!

A great line of thought. I would like to see if we can extend it further. Would it be a good idea to measure the investment in the conference and then follow the women for a couple of years to see the tangible and intangible benefits that result? Then we can show the good of the model and see areas for improvement.

Yes, that's a great idea. We can track the initial investment, the seed grants and the growth. We will have constant contact with the women both via network technology and on the ground.
