Background

A group of vipassana meditators undertook a greenery project of 13,000sqft in NW corner of Dhamma Paphulla. The expected outcomes are:

- A deeper silence (reduction of noise coming from outside)
- Cleaner air
- Reduced dependence on deep groundwater
- Enriched soil
- Catalysis of visible and invisible bioprocesses across the campus
- More birds, butterflies and proliferation of the beauties of nature
- Reduction in the cost of maintaining the kitchen
- Better health of meditators from the consumption of naturally grown safe food.

Currently the centre caters to the 10-day courses as well as to many shorter courses. Thousands of meditators have already benefitted from this facility.
About 3000 meditators come to this centre each year. They will benefit from greener campus and a more secure and safer water source and locally grown food.

The outcomes include
- Implementing the principles of water: Conserve, Reuse, Harvest.
- Used water from the kitchen, dining and laundry areas will be channelled to support the planting activity.
- Over 15,000 litres of rainwater will be harvested from office area rooftops.
- A variety of vegetables grown organically to support the kitchen during courses

Technology Used:

1. Foresting with native trees, fruiti trees and multi-canopy layer of trees and plants. Creation of a vegetable patch which will be be watered by drip from kitchen and laundry water. All detergents will be eco-friendly, using bio-enzymes.

2 Two underground sumps and associated plumbing - bigger one for RWH, smaller one for grey water.

The center will regularly maintain the sumps and piping. They will seasonally clean the roofs.

Maintenance for forest garden area will require almost daily attention for 3 years.

Cost: $500,000

Greenery Project cost estimated at Rs.5,00,000/= (ignore $ sign) including the 1st year of maintenance. Centre will upkeep the same thereafter.

Community Contribution Amount: $367,112

Vipassana Meditators have already contributed above amount, and are participating in its implementation.

There is a gap and we request Dhamma Community to contribute by Dana.
