November 23, 2010 - Rudi Dundas and Chris Majors

We were told that 15 - 16 families use this well - 70+ people... We interviewed Taharmina Biri about the well. She said that they had applied for this well for safety and convenience, and that the water is tasty and good for cooking. She has more time to work now. Two of her sons are already working and the 3rd is able to stay in school.

Here arsenic was high so the consumers were forbidden to use the water for drinking or cooking purpose. Water was collected on 30 April to test for arsenic and the report received on May 7th showed arsenic level as 53 PPB. (Indian standard is 50 PPB). Water can be used through a folded material tied to the spout of the hand pump for drinking and cooking. This dugwell is in the list of bi-monthly observation.

visit by dennis baroi and biswajit karmakar

Height of water column is 21.5ft. Water quality is good and awareness prgram is needed to inform the community about the benefits of the use of the chlorinated dugwell water versus arsenic contaminated tubewell water.

similar report of dugwell #PW166 - the height of water column is 20ft. Very fine sediment is visible in the water hence people are not using the water. Awareness meeting is needed to explain why there is fine sediment in the water and from our experience in many cases the water becomes clear as the dugwell gets old and now at the initial stage use of mawtka filter is a must.

Implementer: Project Well and Aqua Welfare Society

AAqua Welfare Society, AWS, is the partner NGO of Project Well. Their office is based in the North 24 Parganas. The 7 honorary board members are located in Kolkata. There were only 5 field workers who were interacting with the villagers and beneficiaries, training the users on maintenance of the dugwells, organizing village meetings and health meetings. This year four more field workers including a management trainee have been contracted due to expansion of the program to other districts like Nadia and Murshidabad. A technical advisor of AWS is based in Kolkata who visits the village occasionally and one awareness programmer who is in charge of awareness programs in the communities and educational institutions. There is an accountant and also a data entry person on part time basis.
