Dear Kusum,
The subsidy amount from the Government of Pondicherry for the construction of a toilet is Rs. 2500 and not Rs. 2200. You can adjust the budget accordingly.

Dear Kusam,
We love the rope pump, so no doubts on that technology. You should have a look at some of the innvotations that have been done since it was exported from here though (most obvious being the complete cover): http://www.elporvenir.org/page/water-projects and I know WaterAid has done improvements in Africa.
In your video on YouTube, the wells look open - have you considered a sanitary lid/seal?
Not clear on the numbers. You talk about 250 families per rope pump and 10 rope pump, but the water beneficiaries total is 1250. It doesn't add up. Can you clarify? Similarly in the hygiene section, you talk of 1000 and 500, which is it? Why not the whole 1,250? or is that an attendance issue? (that I can understand).
Why only 250 for sanition, what do the other 1,000 people do?
Like to see there is a watsan committee.
You mention dropping water tables - any thoughts to working on some watershed protection?
Looks like a good project overall. Thanks,
Rob

Dear Rob,
Good observations!
We are very much working with rope pump not much in open well so far we have not planned for covering the led of a well.
second point regarding 250 families @rope pump actually we calculated 25 families per rope pump. and each family have 5 memebrs as an anverage.so that why number is 1250 people.
when I say member we build capacity that is the number of people who are attending training program, awareness meetings, exposure visits etc. so number is 500-1000
sanitation the direct beneficiaries is 250 as we are building 50 ecosan toilets the total number of household 50 and are 250 members.
yes of course others we will also get benefit and they have been counted in capacity building block.
Regaing water harvest we have mention in the proposal that we will be making tube recharge in the area and that is with community contribution, we have plan to go this project in next cycle of funding and we have given proposal to private corporates to support for water harvest.
thank

Thanks Kusum for the reply and clarifications.
1. With sanitation, you have 250 beneficiaries - do the other 1,000 people already have access to improved sanitation? If yes, what kind of sanitation exists? If not, any plans to provide coverage to the other 1,000?
2. I wasn't asking about rainwater harvesting, but watershed protection - i.e. reforestation, environmental education, etc. It is not required of course, but have you given it any thought?
Thanks,
Rob

Dear Rob,
250 is the direct beneficiary of the project and project will create awarenss among the rest community and facilitate them to get subsidy from DRDA and mobilize them to build toilets.
Ya we have future plan to work on watershed prtection and have given proposal to other funding agencies to work on the issue.
thanks

Dear Kusum,
At Uruvaiyar, the households are supplied with drinking water through mobile overhead tanks by the commune panchayath. This is because of sea water intrusion in this village. I doubt the availability of fresh water in this village. The farmers are complaining on the saline water even up to 500 ft.
In Thondamanatham also, the water table is below 700 ft. as per the local farmers' view.

Dear Natrajan,
come to your all three points; I do agree with what your are saying regarding the water situations in Pondicherry. The situation are much worse in Tamil Nadu than to Pondy.
On the data on household I can respond you soon.
Regarding the DRDA contribution we are receiving only Rs. 2200/- and even in Pondy I had series of meeting regarding this , the DRDA is supporting only Rs. 2200/- so it will be good if we can get some kind of paper from you so that we can show to the department to get the same funds for building toilets.
with regards.

Dear Kuusm,
My view is that the rope pumps to be installed in the villages mentioned above may not be feasible on the comments given by me above (water table 600-1000ft). Please contact Dr. Subramanian, Member Secretary, State Ground Water Authority, Government of Puducherry for further information.
We got the information from the Field staff of DRDA regarding the subsidy amount. If we get the papers we will forward it to you.

Dear Natrajan,
I am sorry you were correct I inquired from DRDA Pondy and they are paying rs. 2500/- and in Cuddalore district we are receiving Rs.2200/- from DRDA.
Thanks for correcting me.
we will change the budget accordingly.
thanks.

Dear Kuusm,
In the proposed villages mentioned above, the Villianur Commune Panchayath has drilled boreholes and constructed overhead tanks for the supply of drinking water. The depth of the boreholes are between 600-1000 ft. The rope pumps can function up to a depth of 120 ft. Since you are going to install rope pump in each vilage at a certain location so as to cover the nearby 25 families, could you please inform the area in each village.
Furtehr, the water supply to a part of the Pondicherry city comes from the Thirukanji village (one of the project villages).
Could you present the status of drinking water availability in these 5 villages ie., no. of households per village, capacity of the Overhead tanks constructed for water supply by the Commune Panchayath, frequency of water supply to the households, etc.,
From our experience, the rope pump best suits in Tamilnadu where there is irregular water supply to the households through the local bodies.
Why you have restricted the supply of water filters only to 50 households (10 filter per village)? You would have considered to provide water filters to all the 25 families/village.
regards

Dear Natarajan,
we have made a survey of 5 villages and found that the villages have drinking water problem.
a) the water table is from 40 feet to 800, it varies from place to place.
b) water is saline in most village and it is true that they are getting water from the tanks and even some places people are buying mineral water from shops.
c) Thondamanatham villages water smells like rotten eggs so I agree that we can have more siphon filter in this particular village to clean the water.
d) Community members from each village wanted to have a hand pump in their villages as there is no water when there is rain or water cut in the villages.
I still believe that we can establish rope pump wherever is it possible to install as community believed that we can install it.
or can reduce the number of rope pumps and increase the number of siphon filter.
I am also changing the amount for DRDA contribution in my budget.
thanks for your valuable comments.
regards.

Dear Kusum,
It's good that you have conducted a survey in all the five villages. Please provide the data as requested in para 3 above.
Bear in mind that the shallow top aquifer is also saline in these villages in most of the places. Also, it is true that people are buying mineral water as you have pointed out.
I doubt whether the water filter would remove the bad odour. Is there any report on the reasons for the bad odour. Thondamanatham village is surrounded by many industries and there would be a possibility for the chemical contamination of the ground water table.
warm regards

Please provide us with actual data on water quality. If it is saline, then there is no point in putting in rope pumps. Siphon filter will not take out salt.
So, if the water table (shallow) is saline, what is the option?
By Humana People to People India Posted on Thu 19 Aug 2010, almost 16 years ago
Dear Rajesh,
we do work with common people and we had good meeting with the community members, the villagers regarding availability of water in the area and we find it demand from the people and they want to have a hand pump or rope pump in their villages as they do face problem for water.
In Pondicherry water is changing its taste almost all places , you can not find same taste water.
but still we can fresh sweet water at particular places.
Siphon filter will be used for cleaning water not for other purpose.

Dear Natarajan,
Our idea was to provide water to the people during the time there is no current, during rain and for the emergency time, for other purposes and drinking too.
In my proposal I have mention that community is having facility by Pondicherry government our idea was to support community when they have problem.
And through our survey we came to know that community also need these rope pumps.
They believe that we can get drinking water in particular sites, recently in village Thondamanatham they have made a bore hole in agriculture land which is close to the village and they got good water.
we have not made any scientific research on this but got the information from community members.
I have changed my project activities and budget as believe your knowledge about Pondicherry and still I believe that we can do our agreed project activities as we have already establish 15 rope pumps in Pondicherry villages and all have good taste water.
we have installed rope in these 5 villages.
1.Thirukanchipet 2. Thanikuppam, 3. Karikalampakkam, 4. Embalam, 5.Perungalur
Rope Pump I am saying that we can increase the number of siphon filter I have not mention that siphon filter will change the odor of water.
regards.
