marketing of the manure and funds from elsewhere

By Project Well Posted on Sun 17 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

A. It is impressive to see here http://peerwater.org/proj_reports/402/attachments/2983 that the manure is already being purchased by a dutch lady. (1) Does she live in India or is she going to take it to her country?

(2). What is the cost per kg of the manure since collecting cost is Rs.2500/-? Is there any local demand for the manure?

B. Contribution by the community of Rs. 3000 per toilet is also impressive.
(1) How long are the SHGs formed? (2) How many members are there in each SHG? Good to see the government involvement. (3) Is there any scheme followed by the DRDA that they will contribute Rs. 2300 per toilet?

marketing of the manure and funds from elsewhere

By Ekoventure Posted on Sun 17 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

Dear Meera Hira-Smith,
Ms. Alice de Jonge a freelance consultant in Sustainable Agriculture lives in a small house with backyard in Tamilnadu and she has purchased the manure for her Kitchen Garden, The price was not fixed. Approximately it was calculated that it would weigh around 35-40 Kg and she paid Rs. 200 (@Rs 5 per Kg). It is an initiative. There is a demand from the farms of Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry.

The collecting cost is negligible in the ECOSAN toilet (just to open the chamber and then close it with cement after the removal of the compost). May be around Rs. 50.

The collection cost in the flush out toilet (from the Septic tank) is Rs. 2,500 -3,000.

The SHGs are of 8 years old. In each SHG there are 12-20 members.

There is a scheme in DRDA under the Total Sanitation Campaign programme wherein they provide Rs 2300 per toilet in Tamilnadu and Rs 2500 per toilet in Pondicherry as subsidy. However, we are yet to receive the subsidy amount from Tamilnadu for the 20 ECOSAN toilets constructed earlier with PWX funding. The officials in Tanjore and Puducherry are insisting that only flush out toilets has to be constructed under the scheme.

Comost disbursement

By PALMYRA Posted on Wed 20 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

Your proposal has covered all the components for smooth implementation.

Could you pl. explain whether the ecosan compost already used for either agriculture or any other purpose?

If u have any tested report regarding the availability of fertilizer in the compost, you can explain.

Thanks,

Dhanam

Comost disbursement

By Ekoventure Posted on Mon 25 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

Dear Dhanam,

Greetings.

The first ECOSAN toilet chamber was opened recently and the entire compost was used by the owner for the trees planted in her backyard. The compost obtained from the second chamber was sold to Ms. Alice de jonge similarly for the Kitchen Garden.

After receiving the feed back we will document the results.

Further, we have not tested on the nutrient contents of the compost. We will arrange to test when we open the other ECOSAN toilets that we have constructed.

Reporting progress

By Blue Planet Network Posted on Mon 25 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

This is a very clear and detailed proposal and clearly based on experience.

Having also a couple of visits, i saw first hand the good work you are doing.

My main request is regarding reporting: frequently, clearly. Can be brief, but i would like to see the use of this platform (clearly the 'training' was not very effective) to track everything including delays.

Thanks,
Rajesh

Contribution amount

By Ekoventure Posted on Sun 17 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

Dear reviewers,

In the previous funding cycle we have got funds for the construction 50 nos of ECOSAN toilets in Puducherry with community contribution of Rs 2,500 per toilet. Also, HPPI NGO got funds for the construction of ECOSAN toilets, with community contribution of Rs. 1000 per toilet.

The proposed villages of both the projects are close to each other and this has created a conflict in the working villages of Ekoventure. The community members are opposing for the contribution collection of Rs. 2500. However, we have managed to convince them and we had started the work in 2 villages.

During this current funding cycle, HPPI has submitted similar proposal with community contribution of Rs 1,500 per toilet contrary to Ekoventure's collection of Rs. 2,500 per toilet in Puducherry and Rs 3,000 per toilet in Tamilnadu.

Hence, it is requested that we may be permitted to revise the budget with community contribution of Rs 1,500 per toilet in order to avoid further conflicts.

Good morning,

How does the Siphon technology work? Also, the summary states that safe water and sanitation awareness meetings will be held to stress the need for both. However, will any hygiene educational trainings or trainings in water source protection, safe water protection, etc, be held?

Thanks,
Jamin Peck
Pure Water for the World

By Ekoventure Posted on Mon 25 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

Dear Jamin Peck,
Greetings.

I apologise for the delayed response.

Mr. Klas van der Ven from Basic Water Needs Foundation (www.basicwaterneedsfoundation.org), The Netherlands had started the production of these filters in India near Auroville during 2008 and now have improved the filters on various aspects like use of different tubes, shape of bulb that regulates the water, etc.,

The day-to-day maintenance of these filters is simple. It requires backwash once in 3 days or once in a week depending on the type of water (more muddy or normal) we filter. All the spare parts are available in the production unit itself. Kindly refer the leaflet uploaded in our profile about the maintenance of the filters.

Awareness meetings for the community members will be organised on safe water and sanitation. Video films on hygiene will be projected in community meetings, women self help group meetings and in Schools located in the project villages. Further, Hand wash camps will be organised in Schools.

Training programmes will be organised for the community members who offer to construct ECOSAN toilets, on the importance of dry toilets, regular usage and maintenance.

What is the cost of replacement of the main candle. I believe it is affordable, but has your experience shown that they will replace on their own on time?

From a sustainability perspective (knowing your interest in solid waste management), can the filter element be returned and reused?

Regards,
Rajesh

Re: filters

By Ekoventure Posted on Tue 26 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

The cost of the main candle is Rs. 65 (or approx 2USD). During our regular monitoring visits, we advise the members to replace the candle whenever found necessary and we only arrange to replace (after collecting the amount from the member). This is certainly a tedious job as some of the members never replace the candle for a long time even after repeated reminders or they would expect us to replace at free of cost.

We have not thought of reusing the filter so far. We will consult the production organisation and explore the possibilities.

Monitoring Hygiene Behavior Change with respect to Gender

By East Meets West Foundation Posted on Wed 20 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

I like your proposal as it addresses access, affordability and gender issues. On the latter, I want to know how you will monitor hygiene behavior change, especially among women participants?

Sincerely,
James

Same question as above, but only please include any indicators you are measuring.

Monitoring Hygiene Behavior Change with respect to Gender

By Ekoventure Posted on Mon 25 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

Dear James Dien Bui,

Greetings.

I apologise for the delayed response.

The community members for the construction of ECOSAN toilets at their houses will be selected from the women self help groups functioning in their respective villages.

The women self help groups conduct regular weekly/monthly meetings for savings and loan disbursement. We have made arrangements that the selected women beneficiaries will get a loan (repayment of equal monthly instalments) towards their contribution amount.

Thus, in the meetings the status of ECOSAN toilets will be discussed. Also, regular visits of field staff will help to observe the hygiene behavioural change.

Pushpalatha

Please clarify this a bit more. Ekoventure is giving them a loan? Have you done this in the past? What is the repayment rate?

If the DRDA amounts are not being received, it appears a big hit to the finances? Is Ekoventure holding this loss?

Also, please answer James' question with the specific indicators/data you are measuring. How are you tracking/displaying/sharing?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Re: Monitoring Hygiene Behavior Change with respect to Gender

By Ekoventure Posted on Tue 26 Jul 2011, almost 13 years ago

The selected woman participant is a member of the SHG. The SHG provides loan to the member for the construction of toilet based on the recommendations of Ekoventure. The interest rate is 2% per month. This interest amount will be partly utilised for the administration of the SHG and at the end of the 3rd or 5th year the accumuated interest amount is shared among the group members.
We have successfully arranged to get the subsidy amount for the beneficiaries in our earlier project implemented in the Villupuram District, Tamilnadu. However, The DRDA subsidy for the 20 nos of toilets constructed earlier is yet to be received. We are taking necessary steps to get the amount released.

The amount pertaining to the subsidy from DRDA was also contributed from the beneficiaries. Hence, the subsidy amount will be directly received by the beneficiaries. Ekoventure will facilitate the process.

The regular use of the toilet by the family is monitored on fortnightly intervals in the initial stage and on monthly intervals during the latter period.
cleanliness of the toilet, Odour from the toilet, filling of the chambers, change of chambers after the completion of the 1st chamber, maintenance of delivery pipelines of the washwater and urine are the parameters that are recorded during the visits.

We are maintaining a register on the performance of the 20 ECOSAN toilets constructed earlier under PWX funding.

regards

Pushpalatha
