plan 155Promotion of Biosand Filter for Health

Summary

ANEPO AND TGGA intends to sensitize the community on safe and clean water to healthy family and also to help the community on having clean water through the use of simple technology BIOSAND FILTER which is affordable

Background

Water situation in our area is not safe and little have been done to educate the community. Many get water from shallow boreholes which are polluted causing frequent cholera cases. In some areas where ANEPO and TGGA are going to engage the water is pollute by emission of chemicals from Green houses and borehole is the only solution
So far in the areas which ANEPO and TGA are going to work on have no access to safe and clean water education programmes,
We have already issued questionnaires to the community.

    Greetings Mama Africa!

I see where you intend to use the grant to sensitize and educate both women and girls about the importance of clean water, with a focus on the Biosand Filter. Do you plan to make a BSF in a training workshop so they can see how it is made and how it works? Do you then hope to have the participants of the training go back and make a filter for their household?

Is the technical cost you list of 30,000Tshs the cost of producing one BSF? Have you costed out the materials you will need? Can you provide that detail as part of the $1000 grant requested?

Are you hoping to to the school rainwater harvesting with Raincatchers? Do you have a plan in place with them, and a timeline?

I have been assigned to help you through this review process, so feel free to contact me if you have questions, or need help.

All the best, Jan Hartsough for Crabgrass and AWWC

In schools where water harversting will be engaged ANEPO had in mind that this water want be safe to children to drink so BSF will also be an important technology. The tree plant issues will arise as a way to raise income in schools from sale of trees this will help to make more BSF in the concerned schools.

    Hello Mama Africa,

In your submission, you mentioned that you intend to introduce water harvesting in schools. Anna and I would like to know if your project is combining the BSF and Rain water harvesting technologies. It sure will be a good idea especially if the problem you identified in your targetted school has both water quality and quantity dimensions. We hope the costings of both technologies have been adequately considered and intergrated. Best of luck.

Hello my beautiful daughters thanks for comment. Yes we are using both technology to schools as the harvested water want be suitable for drinking, so we have to use BSF to make safe for the children.BUT the cost of harvesting is not include in the $1000 grant as the Raincatcher from Nairobi have requested separate cost.

If it is possible, it would be good to add in the answers you have given to the various questions asked - for instance, adding the costs of biosand filter to the budget strengthens it, So does putting in your action plan details for the biosand filter training. It's my understanding that tomorrow is the deadline for making any changes to the proposal itself. I wish you much success in implementing both the BSF and the Raincatcher harvesting system in 2009. ANEPO have 4 qoutations of mold which are ranging from Tshs 2.3 million -2.5million. We have gone to extent of approaching a Designing Corporation the cost is still high. This is equivalent to $ 1916.70 to 2083.30.

While I have seen these ladies in action in their community and know that they have been making postive changes and are very capable of reaching their groups and implementing projects, I do not feel they have effectively shown in this application the thorough planning that is needed for a water project of the scale and variety they are proposing. With more time and directed planning strategies I believe they will be prepared to implement the activities outlined in their application.

I think it would be a stronger proposal if it focused on the biosand filter, and didn't talk about other work and issues of the organization. It will be a challenge just to accomplish the first step of training people to actually make the BSF before it can be introduced to a school or a community. I believe they have the capacity and drive to bring BSF to their chosen communities.
