Construction of one borehole for Zimanimoto secondary School aiming at providing clean and safe water to 422 people including 304 students 18 school staffs and 100 community around school.

Narrative

Before signing a contract with the company assigned to construct the pump, PADI started to mobile school community by conducting meetings with school staff members at the time the project was starting students were in holiday. During the meeting the following issues were addressed including signing the contract which included the responsibilities of school of forming: Formation of Wells Monitoring Committees (WMC) which consists of 10 people, construction of Pump House, Formation of Water Maintenance Fund and attending one day training, then after,
PADI contracted Handei Tanzania Company Limited to construct one Hand Pump at Zimanimoto Secondary School, according to the study done by the company, the geology of the area comprise of granite gneiss course sand graves fine sand, the outcrop of granite are seen some few meters from school. Weathered granitic rock can be encountered from 14m and below up to 30m though it differs from place to place. Below that depth fresh rock can be encountered.
Drilling method used was Mud rotary by PAT DRILL 301ARG. The well at Zimanimoto was drilled to the depth of 28m and was found to have sufficient water with yield of 2260 liters per hour
School participation: The school authorities participated well during hand pump and pump house construction with water table ranging from 15m below ground level.
Water quality analysis: Handei Tanzania Company Limited collected water sample for physical and chemical analysis tests. The results was as following : site-Zimanimoto Secondary School, Source-sw, Ph 5.3, EC 30.5,T.hardness 5.0,T.Alkaline 14, Ca2+ -Nil, Mg2+ 2.43, Cl- 6.38,NH3-H –Nil,NO2- 2, Iron0.13,TDS 18.3,E.coli –Nil.
• General recommendation from this result by Lake Nyasa basin Sub Office Songea under the Ministry Of Water pH should be raised by application of lime.
• Remarks: The water is soft and acidic

Initial impact is that over 422 people now are receiving clean water for drinking and the same water now at Zimanimoto Secondary school are now using for watering flowers and cleaning classrooms and staff houses.More time is now being spend for academic issues than before. (more detailed will be posited next week).

Sustainability

Creating and measuring long-term impact

To make the project sustainable the following actions has been done and others will be done before 15th July 2011.
i. A training session will be conducted to 10 people who are members of Well Monitoring Committee (WMC) on how to manage to perform miner repair, clean, maintain the pump and monitor any problems associated with their functioning.
ii. These people, being school community/villagers living in the vicinity of the pump, will be on hand to maintain the wells and have formed committee(5 men and 5 women)
iii. Water Maintenance Fund ( WMF) with a total of Tsh.100,000
iv. Construction of Pump House has been done by the school communities as their contribution to the project (the pump house is not yet in completed stage, phots for final stage will be uploaded later)

Other Issues

Unusual and unexpected issues faced during project execution

We have delayed to start project implementation. We have started in January 2011 instead of starting in October 2011 due to delay receiving funds.

Learnings

Knowledge of project and process for sharing

Right Support to the right needy group is having positive support this has been learned from Zimanimoto Secondary School where they have been suffering much in getting water from rivers and other unsafe source of water. The support has made them be very excited which has enabled them to participate full in doing their duties including foming committee of ten people, Well maintanance fund totalling Tsh.100,000 and constructing Pump house in time.It is at the final stage now.
