Providing drinking water and sanitation facilities to the government school in Sundarwadi, Aurangabad. We have implemented a water system allowing the village access to a safe water supply.
Narrative
The activities implemented were - (i) Construction of sanitation unit with one common toilet 4 urinals (2 urinals each for boys and girls respectively) (ii) a drinking water tank of 2000 capacity has been constructed (through govt funds). (iii) Trees plantation in school campus and surrounding open area of school. (iv) Health and sanitation education to school children and teachers.
Under the school drinking water and sanitation project, the drinking water connection has been provided to the school and the water is being stored in the newly constructed water storage tank which is constructed under the Govt. funds having the capacity of 2000 lit. Under BPR, construction, toilet unit having 1 toilet and 2 urinals each for boys and girls has been constructed. A separate water storage tank of 500 lits capacity has been constructed for the toilet unit and separate water connection has been provided to the water tank.
Under the tree plantation activity, the contour trenches have been excavated in the surrounding area of the school of approximately 15,000 sq.ft and a plantation of 3,000 trees have been made. Similarly in the school premises about 150 trees have been planted.
There are no changes or deviations in the original plan. In the original plan, a budget of 375 $ was sanctioned for the construction of drinking water storage tank for the school. Through the efforts of the school committee the government funds have been accessed for the construction of school water storage tank. Therefore there is a balance of USD 324 which is unspent. This amount would be used for the plantation gap refilling.
The watershed work has been completed by WOTR in March 2009. 92000 plants have been planted the land treatment of 289 ha and the afforestation on 102 ha. approx.. The drainage line treatments such as construction of 6 checkdams, earthen bunds of large size 7 and small size 17 have been completed. Horticulture (Sweet lime) has been developed on 4 ha. belonging to 17 farmers. Under the govt. funds, 3 percolation tanks have been constructed. All these watershed treatments resulted in the increase of ground water level resulting in agriculture irrigation crops in 110 ha. and perenial agri horticulture and other crops in 6 ha. Due to the watershed treatment work the drinking water well has sufficient water throughout the year.
Under this project existing drinking water well was excavated and constructed and the water was lifted from the well by installing 5 hp electric pump on the well and this drinking waters was transported to underground pipeline of 810 m in length and stored in newly constructed water storage tank having the capacity of 25000 lit. The drinking water is provided through the construction of 5 standposts at different locations.

Sustainability
Creating and measuring long-term impact
The school committe will be responsible for the repairs and maintenance with the support of teachers and parents.
Other Issues
Unusual and unexpected issues faced during project execution
The physical implementation of the village drinking water project was completed by WOTR in the September 2008. The water had to be transported from the village pipeline source to the school. The electric connection was delayed due to the non-permission from the Forest dept as the line connection crossed through their area.
Finally the electric connection has been obtained in March 2009 and water is now available to the school. Hence the completion report was held up and delayed.
Learnings
Knowledge of project and process for sharing
Before the initiation of the drinking water project, the efforts should be made to get the electric connection in time.
